Three states claim Abraham Lincoln as their own, but in 1861, Lincoln himself cleared up any confusion. In 1809, Lincoln was born in LaRue County. Some fifty years later, in now public notes planned for a speech meant to reinforce the principles of his previous year's election to President, Lincoln had included  “What Kentuckian, worthy of his birth place, would not do this? Gentlemen, I too, am a Kentuckian.”
